5 Tips to Raising Readers

Books On Their Interests 

Have books that your kids are interested in. It's a good to have books at different reading levels in your child's area of interest.

They can get excited about the topic. About wanting to learn in their area of interest. They will look at books more to learn more. They'll want to want to read about their topic of interest.

What topics interest your kiddos? What are they always asking questions about? What excites them?

2. Have Books Available

Make age appropriate books available to your kiddos in different places. They need to have access to books.

They need to explore books by looking at the pictures and the words. They need to touch the pages and interact with them.

There's more to books than just reading them. They need to be discovered. And treasured.

Some ideas of where to keep books:

  • Books on bookshelves: in living room, den, bedrooms.

  • Books in baskets: living room, den, bathroom, at the table during breakfast.

  • Books in the car: for on the road and take with you when out and about for entertainment.

  • Books in the stroller: great time for kids to look at books and do activity books

3. Reading is a Priority

When we read we paint new worlds with our imaginations

Read to your kiddos for just 10 minutes every day for 21 days will create a habit.

Then increase to 20 minutes of reading every day for 21 days to create a new habit.

Read every day to make it a joyful habit. Because it creates connections with your kiddos.

That sparks the magic. And love of reading!

When children see that reading is fun. And enjoyable. And we make it a priority.

Then it will be a priority for them too.

Children love quality time with loved ones. Reading to kiddos creates that quality time. And it's beneficial for their future. It's a win-win.

4. Show That You Love Reading

Read books you love every day. Set an example for your kiddos.

Show them your love of reading. By reading books you are interested in.

When kids see us reading they want to copy us. When we read again and again. They know that we love it.

It can be different kids of books. Magazines. Comic books. How to books.

What are you going to read today that you enjoy? What are you interested in? What do you want to learn about?

5. Read Aloud Every Day

Reading aloud is the simplest way to make learning fun and can be done every day at any age.

No matter the age of your child. Or their reading ability. Continue to read aloud to them every day!

By listening to you read out loud kiddos learn language skills and concepts of print (the direction we read, the front cover, back cover).

They learn how to read. How to be better readers themselves. They learn new vocabulary. Which increases their understanding of the story.

Best of all. You can start reading to your kids at any time. And keep reading aloud to them even when thy learn how to read.

Read books aloud that are at their level. And a little above their level.

Reading aloud to our kids is a great way to spend quality time together! And help them be successful!
